Guadalajara-based singer/songwriter Sara Valenzuela is known for churning out the most charming indie pop ever to have emerged from Mexico (see "Lado Este," her Suzanne Vega-flavored 2005 solo debut, which Marc Ribot (Elvis Costello, Tom Waits) and Melvin Gibbs (Rollins Band, Marisa Monte) perform), the former lead singer of the pop-punk act La Dosis (The Dose) hosts the radio program Jazz Solo in her hometown. She began hosting the show in 1991, and although most artists would consider weekly DJ duties a sideline, for Valenzuela they're a gateway to more informed artistry.
“I try to be open to myriad influences,” said Valenzuela, who was born in Mexico City but her family moved to Guadalajara soon after. “All different kinds, rock greats like The Who and Peter Gabriel, but also by soul singers like Marvin Gaye and jazz singers like Billie Holiday. I try to be open because it’s easier to find your voice that way.”
Following her career as vocalist of one of the pioneering bands of the funk-pop of Mexico, The Dose, she subsequently turned to theatre and participated in several musicals (Jesus Christ Superstar, Versus) that lead to later a engagement in an experimental theater project (Group X) led by the painter and singer Jose Fors, where she remained for several years participating in various productions (Doubt Kills, Cartoons I and II, David and Lisa).
From 2009 to 2011 Valenzuela joined the cast of the rock opera Dr. Frankenstein by Jose Fors, which toured several cities. During that time Valenzuela also started pre-production on her newly released second solo album, “En la Cocina” (“In the Kitchen”), produced by Gerry Rosado (Intolerance Records). The album features guest appearances by Jay Rodriguez (Groove Collective), DJ Logic, Hans Glawishnig, Ben Stivers, Alonso Arreola, Alex Otaola, Daniel Zlotnik and Frankie Mares.
